Human Rights

Human Rights Program

Inmates as a result of their detention don’t enjoy many of their civil, political and economic rights. Many of their other fundamental rights are violated while they are in detention centers. This is where our advocacy steps in, to promote and protect the human rights of prison inmates and those awaiting trial, this being viewed from the reformatory role of those institutions.

We advocate for the implementation of the United Nations. Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT) and the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) adopted in 2002 and entered into force in 2006.  OPCAT is a human rights treaty that assists in the implementation of and builds on the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment (CAT) and helps States meet their obligations under CAT. The objective of OPCAT is to prevent the mistreatment of people in detention. Cameroon is a signatory of the convention and the optional protocol.
